Astronomers have uncovered a previously unknown, extreme kind of star factory by taking the temperature of a distant galaxy using the ALMA telescope. The galaxy is glowing intensely in superheated cosmic dust while forming stars 180 times faster than our own Milky Way.

Astronomers in the “GBT Observations of TMC-1: Hunting Aromatic Molecules” research survey, known as GOTHAM, have released a spectral line survey with largest amount of telescope time ever conducted, charting more than 100 molecular species only found in deep space.

Sonidos de ALMA es un punto de encuentro entre la radioastronomía captada por el Atacama Large Millimeter/submilliter Array (ALMA) y la música de quienes quieran crear obras a partir de observaciones del radiotelescopio más importante del mundo.
Nació de la inquietud recurrente de artistas y astrónomos por comprender y trascender el Universo. El proyecto germina junto con la llegada a Chile del festival de música e innovación Sonar+D: el ambiente perfecto para que astrónomos y músicos busquen un lenguaje común. Es así como la organización del festival propone el proyecto a ALMA y en conjunto dieron el primer impulso a la idea.
La tarea no fue fácil. Las ondas captadas por ALMA son de una naturaleza completamente distinta a la materia prima habitual de los músicos. El astrónomo de ALMA, Antonio Hales y el ingeniero de la Universidad de Chile, Ricardo Finger, debieron desarrollar un método que mantenga el origen cósmico en los sonidos creados.
Sonidos de ALMA es una iniciativa que busca interpretar y decodificar las frecuencias del Universo transformándolas en sonidos, para que realizadores de todo el mundo puedan componer, compartir y crear una comunidad unida por una búsqueda que ha cautivado al ser humano desde hace miles de años.
