    AUI is Chartered

    to acquire, plan, construct and operate laboratories and other facilities that would unite the resources of universities, other research organizations and the Federal Government. The following year AUI begins building Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and the world’s first user facilities including the Brookhaven Graphite Research Reactor, the first reactor built in the United States for peacetime atomic research.

    NRAO & Green Bank Observatory Are Developed

    AUI begins managing the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) for the National Science Foundation (NSF), creating the Green Bank Observatory the following year.

    DNA Imagining

    Brookhaven researchers discover a new way to study DNA and produce a photographic image of DNA synthesis in plant roots. The results provide the first evidence that Watson and Crick’s model of DNA replication operated at the level of individual chromosomes.
