Astronomers from 107 nations convened at the International Astronomical Union’s (IAU) 2024 General Assembly. Among them, 10 early career researchers had the opportunity to engage with colleagues from around the world and better understand how their studies fit into the broader research community.
The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), one of the largest and most sensitive telescopes of its kind in the world, received a visit from United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres, who had the opportunity to learn about how ALMA’s high-tech systems capture and combine signals from the cosmos.
An international team of astronomers led by Jessica Speedie, Department of Physics & Astronomy Ph.D. candidate at the University of Victoria (Canada), observed the well-characterized protoplanetary disk around AB Aurigae and found observational evidence that matches the alternative “top-down” theoretical sequence of planet formation.
Through funding from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Associated Universities Inc. (AUI), Tumble Media and the STEM Transformation Institute at Florida International University (FIU) are collaborating to support the STEM identity and literacy development of regionally and culturally diverse Latine families through podcast-initiated science talk at home. Seventeen episodes will be recorded for this project in Spanish and English.
