Michael Witherell is the Laboratory Director at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
He also served as Director of Fermilab from 1999 to 2005. Between those two appointments, he was Vice Chancellor for Research at UC Santa Barbara and held a University of California Presidential Chair in the Physics Department.
Dr. Witherell received the American Physical Society’s W.K.H. Panofsky Prize in experimental particle physics for his research using silicon microstrip detectors to study charm physics at Fermilab.
He has been elected as member of the National Academy of Sciences and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He received the U. S. Secretary of Energy’s Gold Award in 2004 for his service as Fermilab Director.
